The Penguin adult brief was to design a cover for Raymond Chandler's crime novel, 'The Big Sleep'. The inspiration for this design came from the symbolism of the greenhouse and the orchid at the beginning of the novel when Marlowe is given his commission by General Sternwood, setting the scene for the rest of the story.
